How the Retina Helps You See

The retina is a key part of your vision—it detects visual properties using the light that enters your eye. Photoreceptors inside your retina convert light into electrical signals which travel through the optic nerve to your brain. This is how you’re able to see the world around you.

When the retina is damaged, it can affect how vision is communicated with your brain. Scheduling regular, comprehensive eye exams is crucial for monitoring retinal health, so your eye care provider can detect and treat retina problems as soon as possible.

Spotting Symptoms

The retina is essential for maintaining clear vision and overall eye health, yet you may not notice when changes develop. Eye exams use diagnostic technology to look at tissue health in-depth, allowing us to spot tiny changes impacting the health and function of your visual system.

Symptoms you can see indicating retinal damage include:

  • Blurry vision
  • Double vision
  • Peripheral vision loss
  • Sudden floaters

Detecting Changes in Your Retina

Changes or abnormalities in the retina can develop slowly or start too small for you to experience visual symptoms. Regular eye exams are recommended to detect the tiny details, so we can have an in-depth understanding of how retinal health changes over time. Patients at a high risk of developing retinal conditions should have a diagnostic retinal exam.

Using various technologies and assessments, your doctor can examine your retina for signs of disease and abnormalities.

Evaluating & Treating Retinal Health

We use specialized eye diagnostic equipment to thoroughly examine your retinal health. Our technology supports our ability to provide accurate diagnosis so we can develop treatment tailored to your eye health, down to the finest details.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) uses light waves to capture detailed, cross-sectional images of the retina. The noninvasive test measures tissue thickness and maps its layers. The more we can see about the retina, the more accurately we can detect potential problems.

OCT technology can help diagnose various eye conditions, including diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration (AMD), and retinal vascular occlusions.

Indocyanine green angiography (ICG) uses ICG dye to examine blood flow inside the choroid (a thin tissue layer filled with blood vessels). The choroid supplies oxygen and nutrients to the retina. ICG dye emits light (autofluorescence), enabling imaging technology to more easily follow and record blood flow.

ICG can help diagnose eye problems related to blood vessel health, such as diabetic retinopathy, or help eye surgeons prepare for procedures to repair eye tissue.

A diode retinal laser uses a high-intensity beam of light, which is absorbed by the retina. Laser treatment (photocoagulation) can help shrink or eliminate abnormal blood vessels in the retina to help improve blood flow or prevent fluids from leaking into the eye.

Laser treatment can be a quick, effective way to manage retinal conditions. Retina lasers can be used to treat diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and retinal tears or detachment.
